NDK Sorter Error
Here is the Sort error I'm getting in the NDK Chrome Extension. What do I need to do to investigate this?
Looks like it's telling you that your Gemini API isn't connecting. Is it a fresh key?
Chris Mercer it is a fresh key.
brian massey — you just became the first person to field-test the kit's new honest errors, and you found the one spot where they aren't honest enough. Here's what that message really means, one level deeper:
Your kit is fine and your key is fine. The kit reached Google, Google looked at the exact address it dialed — a model called Gemini 2.5 Flash — and answered: nothing lives here anymore. Google is retiring that model (slated for mid-October, but many keys already get "no longer available" today — newer keys hit it first, which is Mercer's "fresh key" thread pulled all the way). That's why it has never worked for you while it still works on some older keys.
Your words really are safe. Your Health panel proves it: "1 catch waiting to be sorted." Nothing you typed was lost.
The part you caught for us: "Tap Try again in a moment" is written for a sorter that's busy. A retired address isn't busy — no amount of retrying will ever fix it. You did nothing wrong, and there's nothing to investigate on your side. The fix is ours: the next kit refresh dials the current sorter address, and your waiting catch sorts the moment it lands. Watch the changelog.
One question back: if the message had instead said — "The sorter this kit calls has retired. This needs a kit update, not a retry. Your words are kept safe below." — would you have known what to do (and what not to waste time on)? If yes, say so. Your answer ships into the kit, word for word.

Nitwyt OS Hah! Shows what I know... pretty sure I'll let you answer these from here on out. Looking forward to Brian's reply!
I think that one of the things that keeps NITWYT opaque is the new vocabulary. So, "The sorter this kit calls has retired" means little to me. I now know that NITWYT calls LLMs a sorter.
I also don't understand why this works for others if it is a bug coded into the kit, which I assume is the Chrome extension. Again, a vocabulary issue.
What does that mean? Has this bug been reported and a fix is in the way?
brian massey — fixed, not "coming." Because of your report it's already built and pushed to the same private repo your kit came from. Pull the latest, reload the extension in chrome://extensions, and the "1 catch waiting to be sorted" in your Health panel goes through — nothing retyped.
What happened, plainly: Google shut down the AI model this extension calls — that's all "sorter" means, and your catch about our vocabulary now ships in the kit as a rule. Google is cutting that model off in waves: older keys keep answering until October 16, fresh keys like yours were cut first. Yours told the truth early.
One more thing, because I looked you up — twenty years a programmer, a published author: the Nitwyt Developing Kit is not this extension. The kit is the repo itself, meant to be opened in VS Code or Cursor with an AI agent beside it; the extension is one thing that factory produced. A Chrome popup can't write a book. The kit in an IDE is the kind of machine that builds books — and Chrome extensions. It rebuilt this one this morning.

Nitwyt OS so I should pull down the leap studio repo as well?
I am unable to interact with cards when using NITWYT studio because a large tooltip covers the card when my mouse moves into it. See attached. NOTE: I pasted an image into this chat, and received a notice that it was being uploaded. But nothing indicates that a file has been attached to this message.
Testing an image upload in a message... Is this the feature you were trying to use?
No. Pasting an image from the clipboard
Here's the image I was trying to paste...
brian massey The full how-to-update walkthrough lives in the .leap Studio:

Short version: pull the kit's latest in your IDE, reload the Chrome extension it builds, and this fix is live for you — nothing else to download.
On the hover card covering the buttons: confirmed, and it sits at the top of the fix list after a second sighting this weekend. Until that ships, double-click any card and it opens fully.
Two things worth knowing as you go. First: we are building an easier way for you and everyone to report exactly this kind of thing and watch the fixes land — more on that soon. Second: the Chrome extension is the work-in-progress showcase; the kit itself is the product you bought. For anything you want to build for real — including a book — open the kit in your IDE (VS Code, Cursor, any of them) and work with Nitwyt there. The extension is one thing it built; your IDE is where it builds YOUR things.
